口語(yǔ)課上,雷蒙德的中國(guó)學(xué)生在用英語(yǔ)向他提問(wèn)!袄酌傻,您是從哪所……
哪所……”她忽然忘了一個(gè)單詞,于是轉(zhuǎn)過(guò)頭用中文問(wèn)同學(xué):“大學(xué)怎么說(shuō)?”“好像是university!薄笆裁?uni……你再說(shuō)一遍!眱蓚(gè)人就這樣把老師晾在了一邊!盀槭裁床粏(wèn)我呢?你們交了這么多學(xué)費(fèi),難道是來(lái)教我學(xué)中文的嗎?”雷蒙德干著急,沒(méi)辦法。這種情況在英語(yǔ)課上經(jīng)常發(fā)生,以至于他最先學(xué)會(huì)的兩句中文是“怎么說(shuō)”和“啥意思”。其實(shí),理想的課堂情況應(yīng)該是:學(xué)生忘記了“大學(xué)”這個(gè)詞,于是問(wèn)雷蒙德:“高中以后的學(xué)校教育用英語(yǔ)怎么說(shuō)?”“大學(xué)!薄澳敲创髮W(xué)文憑呢?”“叫學(xué)士學(xué)位,分文理科!薄凹幽么蟮拇髮W(xué)是不是有不同的學(xué)院?”“有,比如商學(xué)院、法學(xué)院、藝術(shù)學(xué)院等”……問(wèn)答可以一直繼續(xù)下去。一堂課上完了,學(xué)生不但學(xué)會(huì)了一串單詞,還大致了解了加拿大的高等教育?上Ш苌儆兄袊(guó)學(xué)生這樣學(xué)英語(yǔ)。
加拿大人雷蒙德是北京新航道學(xué)校的英語(yǔ)老師,曾在西安教過(guò)少兒口語(yǔ)。在他看來(lái),學(xué)英語(yǔ)好比鍛煉身體,要想學(xué)好,必須認(rèn)認(rèn)真真下功夫練習(xí),多聽、多說(shuō)、多問(wèn)、多想。如果總是不習(xí)慣用英語(yǔ)交流,而常把中英文混在一起,遇到困難嘴里就蹦中文,無(wú)論如何也學(xué)不好。他說(shuō):“很多中國(guó)學(xué)生急于求成,一天背幾百個(gè)單詞,以為詞匯量大了英語(yǔ)水平就會(huì)提高?墒侨绻銌(wèn)他們每個(gè)詞有幾種意思,究竟怎么用,能不能造個(gè)句子,他們就傻眼了。這就像一些美國(guó)肥胖癥患者采用各種速效減肥療法一樣,治標(biāo)不治本,過(guò)一陣子還會(huì)反彈!弊非笏俪傻膽卸栊睦硪脖憩F(xiàn)在課堂交流中。拿上面那個(gè)提問(wèn)的學(xué)生來(lái)說(shuō),她急于知道一個(gè)英文單詞,請(qǐng)教中國(guó)同學(xué)比請(qǐng)教外國(guó)老師容易得多,就馬上直接問(wèn)到了答案,而沒(méi)有帶著刨根問(wèn)底的態(tài)度提出更多的問(wèn)題、獲得更多的知識(shí)。
讓雷蒙德感到遺憾的還有一點(diǎn):不少中國(guó)人學(xué)英語(yǔ)并非出于興趣,而是出于就業(yè)壓力,擔(dān)心學(xué)不好會(huì)被社會(huì)淘汰,這與西方國(guó)家的公民學(xué)第二外語(yǔ)的出發(fā)點(diǎn)有很大差別。有時(shí)候,中國(guó)學(xué)生的`家長(zhǎng)也會(huì)到課堂來(lái)旁聽,鼓勵(lì)自己的孩子大膽開口說(shuō)英語(yǔ)。然而,他們的鼓勵(lì)往往適得其反。越是有家長(zhǎng)在場(chǎng),學(xué)生越縮手縮腳、張口結(jié)舌,弄得雷蒙德恨不得把他們都請(qǐng)出去,給孩子們一個(gè)輕松自由的空間。他鄭重地對(duì)記者說(shuō):“請(qǐng)務(wù)必告訴中國(guó)讀者,學(xué)外語(yǔ)重要的是選一個(gè)自己真正感興趣的地方入手,深挖下去。如果你喜歡打乒乓球,不妨從網(wǎng)上找找英文版的國(guó)際乒乓球比賽規(guī)則,掌握有關(guān)的詞匯,試著向老外介紹乒乓球的打法;如果喜歡文學(xué)作品,就多讀些英文作品,把詞匯放在句子中來(lái)記,了解它的用法,而非孤立地背單詞!
采訪完雷蒙德,記者走進(jìn)一家快餐店?看暗淖簧,一個(gè)十幾歲的孩子正一邊等餐,一邊捧著一本厚厚的英語(yǔ)詞匯書,小和尚念經(jīng)一樣反復(fù)念叨著:“settle,s—e—t—t—l—e,settle……”

What I will talk about here may be radical to many and arouse criticism. I still think things definitely go wrong with the present educational policy.
Students, whether they be small children or college boys, or even post graduates, are oriented to the passing of a disgustingly variety of tests/examinations. How often (virtually every night) do we see first graders bending for hours over homework, the sole purpose of which is to have high scores in exams so that they might go to better middle and high schools. When they are in high schools, things get worse. They will be still more exhausted preparing for the college entrance examination. And the toiling circle does not stop here. They will worry about further exams.
Good examination results determine one’s future. Under such influence everything can be sacrificed, including the students’ health, parents’ money, and most importantly, the quality of education, by which I mean genuine knowledge and skills which can not and should not be tested with exam scores.
The outcome of such faults in the educational policy, although not intended, is that so many a student becomes sort of expert at doing exams and scores high. But they are not competent when they take up their careers. Such is the tragedy of the present education.
Authorities may not admit the disturbing situation, but as an educator myself, I hold the issue self-evident. Things will have to be done to reverse the trend.
