該詩歌的作者普拉西德·卡波(Placide Cappeau)(1880-1887)是個葡萄酒商,同時也是個詩人。他在一位教區(qū)神父的請求下寫了這首詩歌。
一神論牧師約翰·沙利文·德懷特,《德懷特音樂報》的創(chuàng)立者,在1955年將其翻譯為英文。
無論是法文原版,還是常見的兩個英文版歌詞,都描寫了耶穌和對人類救贖的誕生。
